James Roday and Dule Hill on the Third Season of 'Psych'

MediaBlvd was among several websites recently invited to the Vancouver sets of Psych and was given the opportunity to talk to the cast and crew. You can read the full feature about the set visit here. The show’s leads, James Roday and Dule Hill participated in panels about the show’s third season and what we can expect for their characters.

Panel: How has the season changed compared to the first two?
James Roday: It’s 20% bigger. That was sort of the mandate that we put on the table, and we’re sort of blowing it out with the summer stuff, sort of using pretty much our entire season’s worth of budget on just the summer season. So look forward to a lot of winter episodes that happen primarily in the police station. No, we’ve got big stories! We’ve got pirate treasure and dare devils and roller derby and Shawn does his high school reunion. The idea sort of being that, you know, try to compete with the summer blockbuster entertainment that’s always available and just go big. So that’s what we’re doing.

Panel: I hear there’s going to a more emotional side of you this season. Can you elaborate on that?

James Roday: Twenty percent more everything! No, I think that the challenge that was sort of posed to us, which we’ve chosen to accept from our network, was, like, “So you guys want to be the torch bearer for the USA?” Like we want you to sort of start adding layers, and one of those layers is the idea of sort of earning our comedy with each episode, sort of giving it an emotional spine.

James Roday and Dulé Hill talk about their USA Network series 'Psych'

Wait a minute. A vision is becoming clear. Yes. Yes. Got it. James Roday and Dule Hill, the actors who play the detective buddies on the USA Network series "Psych" are on the telephone. They want to promote the third season opener July 18.

Sure, this was prearranged. But that's the whole idea behind the series. Roday plays a faux psychic who fools people into believing he has special powers when all he has are good instincts.

Another vision is becoming clear. The actors will talk about what it means to play characters who are supposed to have such a long history of being best friends.

"We get to sort of invent that history as we go along and make new memories every week. Unless we run for 30 years, we're always going to be way ahead of the game in terms of being able to come up with new stuff," Roday says. "I think it gets more fun for us as we go along because we're also clear on what this relationship is and how it fits into the show."

Get ‘Psych’ed up

“Psych” fans can rejoice as the USA Network hit debuts its third season Friday night.
Set in Santa Barbara, Calif., the hourlong dramedy that features lifelong pals Shawn Spencer, played by James Roday, and Burton “Gus” Guster, played by Dule Hill, expertly solving crimes while faking that hyper-observant Shawn is a psychic, starts at 10 p.m. Friday.

The season premiere will pick up where season two’s cliffhanger left off, with Shawn opening the front door to his mother Madeleine, played by Golden Globe winner Cybill Shepherd.

It turns out Madeleine is a criminal psychologist who returns to help the police department with a case. Quite a surprise for Shawn and his father, retired cop Henry Spencer, played by Corbin Bernsen, as they haven’t seen her in years.

“There’s going to be some tension right out of the gate with the premiere,” Roday said in a recent telephone interview from the show’s shoot in Vancouver.

James Roday totally at home on 'Psych'

James Roday is gonna go ahead and admit it: He just woke up.

The star of USA Network's "Psych" called from Vancouver on Friday morning to talk about the premiere of the show's third season on Friday night, and he's kinda punchy.

I ask how he is doing.

"Pretty damned good," he said, quickly collecting himself. "Feeling alive."

On "Psych," James plays Shawn Spencer, a man with a gift for noticing the tiniest of details who pretends to be a psychic and helps police solve crimes, along with the help of his childhood friend and bantering partner Gus (Dul Hill). He might be pretending, but he's so good at solving cases that police keep calling on him.

James, 32, said fans of the show can look forward to the best season yet.

"The first two years were fun: two guys running around and acting silly and living out their dreams," he said. "We are just maturing as a television series. It's probably fair to say, once you get into a third season on any series, you aren't as nervous (about staying on the air) and can actually start thinking about longevity.

"What is the trajectory here? What are we going to do with these characters and learn about them? That's how we are starting to evolve.

"It's been very invigorating. We definitely bumped it up a notch. Scripts have been far more ambitious. We are also swinging for the fences in terms of worlds we go into, cases we take on. We are a very ambitious group. We are swinging really hard."

Psych Season 3 Set Visit: James Roday and Dule Hill

When it comes to visiting the set of any production, whether film or television, things don’t always go as planned. Given the changing dynamics of shooting a TV series, it’s just something that goes with the territory. When we were recently invited to the set of the USA Network series Psych in Vancouver, for a sneak peek at the filming of Season 3 (July 18 at 10pm), we were originally slated to see a roller-derby sequence being shot at the PNE Agridome for the upcoming season three episode "Talk Derby to Me". In this particular case, the shoot was ahead of schedule so the only thing left to do was to meet and have dinner in downtown Vancouver. Although I sat a few seats away from writer Tim Meltreger, I spent the entire dinner sitting almost directly across from rollergirl/actress Sydney Bennett, who filled me in on how she juggles a career as an actress, her time as a college student in traditional Chinese medicine, and her off time as a member of the Derby Dolls in L.A.’s premiere banked-track women’s roller derby league. What can fans expect from "Talk Derby to Me"? Well, as Sydney told me, a lot of wheels, a lot of action, and Maggie Lawson in roller gear!

The next morning it was off to an early start at North Shore Studios where the confines of a soundstage doubled as the Psych setting of Santa Barbara, California. Given the consistently wet weather of Vancouver, it’s amazing how the production is able to make the exterior shots of Psych work. As we learned, Psych ramps up shooting in the summer months to avoid the off season’s 40 days and 40 nights of rain (and then some) that Vancouver residents have to endure to enjoy their laid back, near paradise lifestyle. As the Psych cast would tell you, Vancouver’s a great city but you’re always up against mother nature when shooting anything in the Pacific Northwest.

For most of the day, we hunkered down inside the upper confines of a board room where the Psych stars individually stopped by to chat throughout the day. As we heard from everyone, the approach to season three is from a 20% bigger and 20% better mentality. In fact, that applies to everything across the board this season, including a 20% deeper exploration of the relationships and the unexplored emotional layers beyond the comedy. As Psych co-star James Roday, who plays fake psychic Shawn Spencer, explained in our first interview of the day, the emotional aspect was originally suggested by the folks at USA, which turned out to be a rewarding collaboration between the network and the production. As Roday elaborated, the network wanted to help breath more substance into the show beyond the comedic elements, stating "... we want you to sort of start adding layers, and one of those layers is the idea of sort of earning our comedy with each episode, sort of giving it an emotional spine."

After two successful seasons, James Roday looks upon the new direction as a challenge, revealing to us that 20% emotional exploration of the characters and their relationships fills am open void that exists on Psych. "One thing that Monk has had from its conception is that his wife was murdered, so they always sort of had that to go back to any time they needed to get heavy on that show. And we don’t really have that, so it’s sort of like, with each episode we’re sort of coming up with an emotional backbone that launches us into the world and helps balance some of the silly things that we do. It’s been good."

'The show’s fun twist is that James Roday’s character, Shawn, a slacker with keen observational skills drilled into him by his rigid father (Corbin Bernsen), passes himself off as a psychic to help police solve crimes. Shawn’s lifelong best friend is Gus.

“You watch Gus in the pilot and Gus now,” Roday says. “It’s like watching a kid go from kindergarten to 12th grade. He was probably the least developed character in the pilot. The traditional sidekick role we have seen many, many times. Because Dule was not interested in being that, and being aggressive with his own ideas and where he wanted the character to go, it allowed him to do things just for Gus.”'

Where you’ve seen him before: He played Billy Prickett in “The Dukes of Hazzard” movie and guested in a recent episode of the NBC anthology series “Fear Itself.”

Fun fact: Roday is also a writer. He co-wrote the movie “Skinwalkers” and wrote the first season finale of “Psych,” two episodes of season two and is working on a tribute to the “Friday the 13th” films for a third-season episode.

On the current Ebony and Ivory promo for the show with co-star Dule Hill: “I think initially we were a little concerned, because we were like, ‘Man, we don’t want to make fun of Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder. Those guys are awesome.’ And then we went and watched the actual video that they made 20 some odd years ago, and it was like, ‘Oh, wow, we’re not actually making fun of them.’ We’re just doing what they did, and it’s really dated and kind of corny. So it made us feel better.”

On what to expect in the show’s third season, premiering Friday: “Our self-imposed mandate for this season was 20 percent more of everything. So you’re going to get 20 percent more action, 20 percent more comedy, 20 percent more drama, 20 percent more emotional grounding. You’re going to see some stuff that you’re not used to seeing on ‘Psych.’ You know, we’re going to be peeling back a few layers on Shawn’s character, looking at his family history a little bit more. There’s going to be some serious moments right out of the gate with the premiere.”

Where you’ll see him in five years: Writing and starring in a remake of “Beverly Hills Cop” with Hill.

‘Psych’ stars talk Cybill, the ’80s and the possibility of a ‘Monk’ crossover

James Roday and Dulé Hill stars of "Psych" recently did a conference call with television reporters to promote the show’s third season, which returns at 10 p.m., Friday on the USA Network.

The show stars Roday as Shawn Spencer, a thirtysomething crime consultant for the Santa Barbara, Calif., police force whose uncanny observational skills allow him to convince others that he’s psychic. Hill plays Burton Guster, Shawn’s best friend, straight-man and reluctant partner.

It really is one of the funniest shows on television so even though I included part of our conversation in my weekly Remote Control column — which appears in Sunday’s print edition — I also wanted to share with you some other material that came out of that call.

So here’s a little extra from Roday and Hill to get you psyched for Season 3:

Q: Cybill Shepherd plays Shawn’s mom. What was it like to work with her?

JR: Cybill was great. She showed up. She was very professional. We actually asked a lot out of her in the premiere, as you’ll see, in terms of sort of anchoring the episode in a dramatic way. She was a gamer. She stepped up. We had fun. I think she was an asset for our show.

Q: Besides Cybill, what are some of the things we can look forward to in this season?

JR: Our self-imposed mandate for this season was 20 percent more of everything. So you’re going to get 20 percent more action, 20 percent more comedy, 20 percent more drama, 20 percent more emotional grounding. We’re going to be peeling back a few layers on Shawn’s character, looking at his sort of family history a little bit more. There’s going to be some more serious moments right out of the gate with the premiere. And then to balance that, you know, we’ve also got some pretty big episodes lined up in terms of scope. We’ve got a daredevil episode where we did more stunts in one episode than we’ve done the entire series combined. So we’re trying to blow it all out man in the name of good, clean summer fun.

DH: We have some great guest actors coming in. We already talked about Cybill Shepherd, but we also have Rachael Leigh Cook. We have Stephen Weber. We have Jeff Fahey. We have Ted Lange. Christopher McDonald, we have coming in.

Q: Is anything going to move forward with the flirtation between Shawn and Jules?

JR: I would say that it’s still certainly going to be an element and we’ll probably do what we usually do which is just dangle it in front of everybody for as long as we can until we, ourselves, get a little uncomfortable with it and then yank it back.

Q: James, can you tell us a little bit about what’s in store for Henry and Shawn this season?

JR: You can’t repair 15 or 20 years of adversity with one moment. But I think what we’re able to do with the premiere is sort of shine a new light on their past and their history, and what Shawn thought was true that might not be completely true. They’re still going to have their problems, but I think we’re moving toward the place where they can understand one another better as father and son.
